Editorial: Johnny Cash and the National Debt

Watching the news this week as it relates to the national debt, I was reminded of a song Johnny Cash used to sing Five Feet High and Rising, which is summarized below.

How high's the water, mama?
Two feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Two feet high and risin'

We can make it to the road in a homemade boat
That's the only thing we got left that'l float
It's already over all the wheat and the oats,
Two feet high and risin'
(Note: In 1980, the debt was 0.9 trillion dollars.)

How high's the water mama?
Three feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Three feet high and risin'

Well, the hives are gone,
I've lost my bees
The chickens are sleepin'
In the willow trees
Cow's in water up past her knees,
Three feet high and risin'
(Note: In 1990, the debt was 3.2 trillion dollars.)

How high's the water, mama?
Four feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Four feet high and risin'

Hey, come look through the window pane,
The bus is comin', gonna take us to the train,
Looks like we'll be blessed with a little more rain,
Four feet high and risin'
(Note: In 2000, the debt was 5.6 trillion dollars.)

How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Five feet high and risin'

Well, the rails are washed out north of town,
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin'
(Note: Today, in 2011, the debt is 14.3 trillion dollars.)

Nuff said?

Pfizer to Suspend Sales of Poultry Drug in U.S.
Pfizer Inc has agreed to suspend U.S. sales of a popular poultry drug after a study found the drug increased levels of a carcinogen in chickens. U.S. health officials said an FDA study found that chickens treated with Pfizer's 3-Nitro drug had higher levels of inorganic arsenic, a known cancer-causing substance. The levels detected were low, and the FDA said eating chickens treated with 3-Nitro did not pose a health risk. 3-Nitro, or roxarsone, has been used by poultry producers since the 1940s as a feed medicine to help control coccidiosis, an intestinal parasitic disease.

New Flu Vaccine Will Look a Whole Lot Like the Old One
The CDC is out with its look ahead at the next flu season, and, in its report, the agency says the FDA has recommended that the 2011-2012 flu vaccine protect against the same strains as it did this year: H1N1 (aka the swine flu, a type of influenza A virus), another type of influenza A virus (H3N2), and a type of influenza B virus.

FDA Insider Trades Probe Deepens
A federal inquiry into insider trading at the FDA, which has focused on an agency chemist who was charged in March, is expanding to look at other government employees, according to people familiar with the matter. Cheng Yi Liang, a longtime chemist at the FDA, and his son Andrew (not an employee at the agency), have been charged with trading stocks of drug companies in advance of agency approval decisions. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304563104576361683671502282.html?mod=dist_smartbrief

$1 Billion in Annual Cost Cuts Eyed by Pfizer
Pfizer Inc. is looking for $1 billion in extra yearly cost cuts on top of the billions of dollars in cuts in R & D it is already making. Executives have been reviewing operations this spring for cuts; they plan to begin implementing the reductions later this year. They plan on cutting annual expenses by $500 million this year and a total of $1 billion next year, mostly from the company's administrative side. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304906004576371561284585844.html

Did You Know...

that the government places tighter restrictions or removes from the market drugs that are being abused? However, when entitlements are abused, they simply increase the budget and use our taxes to keep the system going and growing!
