Editorial: Eleven Rules of Life
Usually, I hesitate forwarding items from the Internet. However, the following is noteworthy. Whether it came from Bill Gates in a speech to a group of high school students or is an excerpt from the book Dumbing Down Our Kids by educator Charles Sykes, it is well worth reading, if you haven't done so yet. It is a list of eleven things you did not learn in school and is directed at high school and college grads.
Eleven Rules of Life
| Rule 1: | Life is not fair-and it never will be. |
| Rule 2: | The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. |
| Rule 3: | You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school, much less college. You won't be a vice-president with a corporate credit card until you earn both. |
| Rule 4: | If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. |
| Rule 5: | Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. |
| Rule 6: | If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault; so don't whine about your mistakes or your parents, learn from both. |
| Rule 7: | Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your room, and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. |
| Rule 8: | Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. |
| Rule 9: | Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. |
| Rule 10: | Television is NOT real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to WORK. |
| Rule 11: | Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one or two along the way. |

Pediatric Drug Handling

Children form a large percentage of the patient population, but few medicines have been designed and tested specifically for paediatric use. Written for new pharmaceutical scientists, this book provides a background in paediatric pharmacy and a comprehensive introduction to children's medication.
Written by international experts in the field, this introductory text is an excellent resource for pharmacists. There are many challenges in the formulation of established, new, and orphan drugs for use in pediatric practice. Many children are treated with adult medicines, employing the skill and judgment of physicians and pharmacists to ensure appropriate drug, dose form, and dosing regimen. There is a notion that it is unethical to trial drugs in children, but it pales against the ethical issues raised by the use of medicines that have not undergone the same rigorous licensing that adult medicines have to undergo by law. According to the text, without clinical trials in children there can be no comfort in the safety of many therapeutic approaches. The ethics of trials in children and also trial design in the case of rare diseases where patient numbers will be limited are presented.
