Editorial: 12th Spanish Congress of Compounding Pharmacy
This week is spent in Madrid attending and participating in the 12th Congress of Compounding Pharmacy. Having attended five of these Congresses previously, it is an enjoyable time renewing international friendships and attending some very well-prepared and well-presented seminars on the scientific, technical, and practical aspects of pharmaceutical compounding.
In addition to my topics of Novel Formulations and Quality Assurance, Rich Moon and Dana Reed-Kane gave presentations on Pain Management, Veterinary Compounding, and Hormone Replacement Therapy. Additional topics for our participation included Compounding Around the World and College of Pharmacy Curricula Related to Compounding. The packed auditorium was located at the College of Pharmacy of Madrid.
Other topics included transdermal compounding, enteric coated capsules, treatment of hyperhidrosis, sterile compounding, homeopathic compounding, formularies, podiatric compounding, novel bases and vehicles for formulation, and many others. It is always interesting to see the progress of compounding pharmacy in Spain and to discuss the challenges they face.
While at this Congress, the International Society of Pharmaceutical Compounding Board of Directors met to make plans for 2008. It appears that ISPhC may be participating in two international programs next year (one in Brazil and one in the United States) as well as initiating new programs to support the technical and scientific aspects of compounding worldwidemore on this later. The Board is made up of members from Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Germany, and the United States.
Sharing opportunities, successes, and challenges of compounding internationally makes one realize we are all in this together to provide patients with individualized medications.
