The United States Pharmacopeia hosted its fourth annual compounding implementation workshop in Rockville, Maryland on September 25-26, 2024. Industry leaders and stakeholders from around the world gathered to discuss improving the quality of compounding to enhance patient safety.

On Monday, September 23, I had the privilege of attending the U.S. Pharmacopeia Joint Healthcare and Safety Expert Committee meeting. Committee members, observers, USP staff, and guests paid tribute to two global visionaries in pharmacy: Dr. Loyd V. Allen and Dr. William M. Heller.

Dr. Heller, a previous USP Executive Director, was recognized for his lifelong contributions and volunteerism to USP's mission with over 60 years of service to USP. In 2022, Dr. Heller was the recipient of the first-ever USP William M. Heller Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Allen, the founder and longtime Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, was commemorated for his volunteerism as a long-serving expert committee member at USP.

Dr. Allen has had an invaluable impact on the pharmaceutical sciences industry. His legacy serves as a guiding force for the industry, thanks to the knowledge and wisdom he shared as a teacher and advocate for compounding, promoting quality and safety for patients.

Dr. Allen was my major advisor in graduate school. After he retired as an advisor, he continued to work to advance personalized medicine in compounding. He was an expert in pharmaceutics and provided the scientific basis for compounding and formulations.

I am grateful to announce the founding of an education grant and fellowship in Dr. Allen’s honor. The Loyd Allen Education Grant and Fellowship Award will enhance and advocate for quality and education for pharmacy professionals in compounding. We will share more information on this grant in the coming weeks.

Dr. Allen and Dr. Heller embodied greatness through their volunteerism at USP and their contributions as global visionaries in pharmaceutical sciences and compounding. We are dedicated to partnering with our friends and colleagues to improve quality in compounding for future generations.
