Regulatory Update
The International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists provided this regulatory update.

The Senate Appropriations Committee recently issued the FY 05 agriculture appropriations report, which contains language addressed to FDA on both human and animal compounding. The animal compounding section is largely constructive; however, the discussion on human compounding language raises significant concerns. IACP is working, along with other pharmacy organizations and coalitions, to garner support for revised text that would replace the initial human compounding report language in the final appropriations report. For more information, please visit http://www.iacprx.org/SACommittee_usp.html.

IACP is preparing an amicus curiae brief ("... a phrase that literally means "friend of the court" -- someone who is not a party to the litigation, but who believes that the court's decision may affect its interest." William H. Rehnquist, The Supreme Court) supporting aspects of a multi-count lawsuit filed by 10 pharmacies in the United States District Court Western District of Texas (Midland Division) against the FDA. Options Exist to Combat Flu
Like many Americans, Karen Johnson of Royal Palm Beach couldn't get a flu shot this year. But she isn't stewing about it. Instead, for the third week in a row, she tipped her head back last Wednesday and poured a small pile of sugary granules under her tongue from a slim plastic vial labeled "Dolivaxil."Made in France and little known in the United States, Dolivaxil is about to explode from obscurity. Big-name retail stores have scoured the pharmacopeia for anything that has a legitimate claim to being an alternative to flu vaccine. For the full story, click here....
Bitter pill for druggists: mail order
Betsy Faulkner has struggled the past three months not to lay off any of her eight employees. The co-owner of Woodinville Medical Center Pharmacy cut the hours of some full-time employees this summer and is trying to pick up more business making medication for doctors and veterinarians. But her sales have not rebounded, and she is filling 500 fewer prescriptions a month than she was in January. "Going after new things takes more time and money, which is hard for a small business like mine," said Faulkner, who now fills 5,900 orders a month. "But without those niches, we probably wouldn't survive." For the full story, click here....
