Commonly Prescribed Medications May Increase Risk of Dementia
A study from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom found there is a link between dementia and certain classes of anticholinergic drugs, particularly antidepressants, bladder antimuscarinics, antipsychotics, and antiepileptic drugs. They report a nearly "50% increase in the odds of dementia." (JAMA Internal Medicine Journal).

"The study is important because it strengthens a growing body of evidence showing that strong anticholinergic drugs have long term associations with dementia risk," said study author Carol Coupland, professor of medical statistics in primary care at the University of Nottingham. "It also highlights which types of anticholinergic drugs have the strongest associations. This is important information for physicians to know when considering whether to prescribe these drugs," she said. "This is an observational study so no firm conclusions can be drawn about whether these anticholinergic drugs cause dementia."

President Signs Executive Order Requiring Disclosure of Healthcare Prices
The President has signed a third executive order (EO) designed to give Americans more information about the cost and quality of healthcare services to help them comparison shop before they get care. It is based on the idea that greater transparency in hospital and other healthcare prices will lead consumers to make better choices about where to get care and thus save money. "No Americans should be blindsided by bills for medical services they never agreed to in advance," the President said in a signing ceremony in the White House's grand foyer. The most contentious part of the order requires hospitals and doctors employed by hospitals to post their charges. In addition to the three EOs, the Administration is also requiring the posting of prescription drug prices.

Did You Know ...

...that there are more interesting observations on the death of Common Sense?

Tip of the Week

Common Sense (CS) lost ground:

  • when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
  • when schools were required to get parenteral consent to administer an aspirin to a student but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
  • when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home but the burglar could sue you for assault.

Another installment about the death of CS will come next week.
