Drug Approvals Hit All-time High
FDA drug approvals hit an all-time high in 2018, with 59 new molecular entities obtaining the agency's permission to head to market. Small molecules continue to account for the largest number of new drugs, comprising 64% of therapies approved in 2018. One of the unique approvals this year was the approval of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals' Onpattro, which acts by RNA interference. Onpattro uses short, double-stranded nucleotides to intercept mRNA before it can deliver the instructions for assembly of an unwanted protein.

PHARMA Raises Prices in 2019
It's a new year, and many top PHARMA companies are taking the opportunity to increase prices for their top sellers. As it has done in the past, several companies in the industry opted to raise prices to ring in 2019, with Allergan leading the pack.

Allergan increased prices on seven drugs by 9.5% to start 2019. Also hiking certain prices was Biogen, raising prices on three drugs between 2% and 6%, and Bristol-Myers Squibb, which raised 5 drug prices between 1.5% and 6%. Additionally, Eli Lilly raised prices for Jardiance and Tradjenta by 6%. Teva raised prices on five products by more than 8%. Merck, for its part, didn't raise prices on January 1 after a handful of price hikes in November and December last year.

Did You Know ...

that Winston Churchill said the following?

"I'd rather argue against a hundred idiots, than have one agree with me!"

Tip of the Week

It makes one wonder about all the "discussions" we see where individuals don't always know the facts but feel free to express their "opinion," which is oftentimes "off the wall" and so inaccurate that it is pathetic. However, they express themselves so forcefully and with confidence that many actually believe them. This is nothing new, as it has been going on for centuries. It is up to each of us to be properly informed; check things out for untruths, partial truths, and misrepresentations; and take what is presented as "news" with a grain of salt and analyze it carefully for truthfulness.
