"Gag Rule" Being Fought by Maryland Pharmacists
Officials in Maryland are trying to eliminate a "gag rule" that prevents pharmacists from telling consumers that they can pay less for their prescription drugs. If successful, Maryland would join five other states-Connecticut, Maine, Louisiana, North Dakota, and Georgia-that have banned the rule that some PBMs put in their contracts with pharmacies. "It is this problem of pharmacists being prohibited from telling people that the price is lower from out-of-pocket insurance price," says Vinny DeMarco, president of Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative, which is pushing the legislation this year. "Sometimes, pharmacists have gag orders and they can't tell the patient it is cheaper to pay cash than go through your plan. That is crazy," said Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) in late December. "Louisiana has outlawed those, but in most states they are still allowed. There would be bipartisan support on that."

OTC Drugmaker Told to Separate the Weedkiller from the Oral Rinse
The FDA has sent a warning letter to the owner of Continental Manufacturing Chemist after an inspection of a plant in Madrid, Iowa, which makes earwax drops, oral rinse, and fluoride toothpastes, as well as lawn care and other products. During a visit in April 2017, investigators discovered that the facility wasn't physically separating the OTC products like the oral rinse from the weedkiller or adhesive remover and didn't even have quarantine markings to make sure products didn't get mixed up. In addition, the plant released at least three batches of oral rinse and two batches of fluoride toothpaste without the products being reviewed by the quality unit.

Teva Cutting up to 40 Manufacturing Sites
Teva now has agreements with workers to close another plant in Israel. That is two down and about 40 to go. Recently, workers walked off the lines after new CEO Kre Schultz said that Teva would cut about 14,000 positions worldwide, with about 1,750 cuts coming from Israel. The financially distressed generics company scrambles to fix big problems.

Did You Know ...

that when we purchased our first house back in the 70's, our home mortgage rate was about 12%? A few years ago these rates were down to about 1% to 2%; now purchasers shop around for something in the 3% to 4% range.

Today's prime rate is in the vicinity of 4.5% and credit card rates are from 12% to 27%. CD rates range from 0.01% to 2.00%.

Tip of the Week

It's amazing how many people make money from shuffling money around. Borrowing money for immediate purchases and not paying it back for several months is very costly. Large purchases do require making a loan, but small purchases where the interest adds up quickly should be paid for by either cash or paying off the balance monthly. Surely we have better uses for the money than the banks!
