(Editor's Note: We are continuing to look at selected events/documents that have helped shape pharmacy. This week, a continued look at the Ebers Papyrus.)
Generally, medicines are directed to be taken or applied for four days; the ingredients are very often four; and in many cases incantations are to be four times repeated. The Pythagoreans swore by the number 4 and probably their master acquired his reverence for that figure (number) from Egypt.
The following are a few more interesting examples.
Remedy to stop the diarrhea:
| Green onions | | 1/8 |
| Freshly-cooked Gruel | | 1/8 |
| Oil and Honey | | 1/4 |
| Wax | | 1/16 |
| Water | | 1/3 dena. |
| Cook and take for four days. | | |
|
Salve to make supple (flexible) the hardenings:
| Hog's Fat | | |
| Oil of Worms | | |
| Oil of the abxersu-animal | | |
| Mouse Oil | | |
| Cat's Oil | | |
| Gather into one and anoint therewith. | | |
|
To prevent burn wounds:
| A Frog | | |
| Warm in oil and rub therewith. | | |
|
What to do to draw out splinters in the flesh:
| Skull-of-the-Shadfish, cooked in Oil | | |
| Apply to the point of the splinter. Thereby it comes out. | | |
|
Remedy to force out the urine:
| Crocus-from-the-Hills | | 1/4 |
| Crocus-from-the-Delta | | 1/8 |
| Abu-plant-from-Upper-Egypt | | 1/16 |
| Abu-plant-from-Lower-Egypt | | 1/16 |
| Berry-of-the-uan-tree | | 1/16 |
| Fresh Gruel | | 1/8 |
| Linseed | | 1/16 |
| Uam-seeds | | 1/16 |
Next Week: Drugs used way back then and still used now (in some form). Also, a copy of a page from the Ebers Papyrus.

China Pharmaceutical Company Using Wrong Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
The FDA has slapped a warning letter on a Chinese drug manufacturer that shipped multiple lots of an over-the-counter (OTC) product to the U.S. containing the wrong active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) because the company messed up a translation. A warning letter was issued October 30, 2017 to OTC drugmaker Guangdong Zhanjiang Jimin Pharmaceutical laying out a host of issues, including discovering that it was using the wrong API for an anti-itch product that was labeled as containing hydrocortisone but actually containing dexamethasone acetate. The warning letter said. "When our investigator inquired about the incorrect API, your firm stated that there was a translation mistake, and the two APIs were believed to be the same ingredient.

that dental caries, although extremely rare before the Pyramid Age, became common as soon as people learned luxury?

Tip of the Week
It's interesting that 50 or so years ago when most people had to work to do daily chores (no dishwashers, clothes washers, few electric tools, etc.), there was no need for exercise gyms, etc. for the populace. Then, "Better living through chemistry" and "Electric, Electronic, and Entertainment Devices" came along and now a new and expanding industry is born; also based somewhat on our not having to do as much physical work dawn to dusk, eating prepared and fast foods, watching television, etc. and living a life of luxury. I'm referring to the workout gyms, personal trainers, etc. Sometimes it makes one wonder if we are better off or worse off! On the positive side, at least it keeps physicians and pharmacists busy!
