| What is Compounding Pharmacy, XV: Summary |
|
A compounding pharmacist practices pharmacy at the highest level. This requires significant clinical and compounding training and application; it requires extensive collaboration with physicians and other healthcare providers; it requires application of scientific principles; it requires familiarity with regulatory and liability issues. A compounding pharmacist, or compounding clinical pharmacist, works alongside physicians and other healthcare practitioners in patient care. The compounding pharmacist is the only healthcare provider with the unique and specific knowledge to extemporaneously compound patient-specific preparations upon request.
Over the past several weeks, we have looked at the following aspects or topics related to Compounding Pharmacy:
- History, development, and current status
- Reasons for growth
- Current scope and coverage
- Definitions
- Meeting patients' needs
- Responsibilities and liabilities
- Education and training
- Cutting-edge technology and treatment issues
- Problem-solving
- Integrity and responsibility
- Public presentation(s) for your community
- Site presentation to your patients
In summary, compounding pharmacy is complex and vitally important to modern-day patient care. It is not for every pharmacist; just those that are serious and dedicated to doing it right!

Zolpidem (Ambien) Linked To Doubling of Emergency Department Visits
A new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), estimated emergency department (ED) visits involving zolpidem overmedication almost doubled from 21,824 visits in 2005-2006 to 42,274 visits in 2009-2010. The report is based on findings from the 2005 to 2010 Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reports, a public health surveillance system that monitors drug-related morbidity and mortality through reports from a network of hospitals across the nation.

Oral Mucositis Symptoms Relieved with Mucoadhesive Rinse
A rinse for oral mucositis has been shown to offer significantly better symptom improvement than placebo in a randomized controlled trial. The mucoadhesive hydrogel (MuGard, Access Pharmaceuticals) coats the oral cavity and mucous membranes. It contains purified water, glycerin, benzyl alcohol, sodium saccharin, Carbomer Homopolymer A, potassium hydroxide, citric acid, polysorbate 60, and phosphoric acid. Some physicians have reported using it instead of "Magic Mouthwash".

Did You Know ...
that the first Monday of September is when we celebrate Labor Day, the "end" of the summer and a day of shopping, vacationing, or rest? It is also the time when football season starts, and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend. Interestingly, for the "fashion-conscious," traditionally, people did not wear white clothes, particularly shoes, after Labor Day. But, not any more since more and more people now wear white all year round, rather than just in the summer. Also, it was the custom to wear a straw cowboy hat from Memorial Day until Labor Day, then a felt one until Memorial Day comes around again.

Tip of the Week
Have a great Labor Day Weekend and celebrate with your family and friends!
