Editorial: What is Compounding Pharmacy, Part I

At the request of a number of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and students, this new series will discuss various aspects of compounding pharmacy. The information presented over the next few weeks can be used to educate patients and the public on "What is Compounding Pharmacy." Also, feel free to use the information on your websites, for local news releases, and wherever and in whatever manner might be used to better educate everyone on compounding pharmacy.

Starting next week, this newsletter will go into various details on the complex practice of compounding. This is considered extremely important because there are many pharmacists entering compounding for the first time and have requested a lot of information on what is expected of them in this growing segment of pharmacy practice.

The approximately 5,000-year heritage of pharmacy has centered on providing pharmaceutical preparations for patients. Pharmacists are the only health professionals possessing the knowledge and skill required to compound medications to meet individual patient needs. Compounding pharmacy and clinical pharmacy are inseparable and work together for the best patient care. Next week, we will start our journey on "What is Compounding Pharmacy."

FDA Okays Additional Saline Imports
The FDA is allowing a U.S. medical supply company to import saline solution from its Spanish plant to address a national shortage. The agency said it has cleared Baxter Healthcare to import saline solution from its facility in Spain after FDA inspectors verified that it meets U.S. standards. The FDA has already cleared another company, Fresenius Kabi, to import saline from its Norway plant.

Drug Penetration Can be Visualized by Mass Spectrometric Imaging
Drug permeability through human skin is a primary challenge because of the highly complex nature of dermal tissue. The authors of this study describe the application of an ambient mass spectrometry imaging method for visualizing skin penetration of sodium channel modulators. The simple and label-free approach enables successful mapping of the transverse and lateral diffusion of small molecules having different physicochemical properties without the need for extensive sample preparation. FDA Banned Drug Plant Because of False Data, Rat Traps, and Other Findings
FDA visitors to a Sun Pharmaceutical Industries drug plant in India before the facility was banned last month from exporting to the U.S. saw testing flaws, a garbage pileup, and a laboratory they called "un-cleanable." The inspectors also observed that some workers misrepresented test data and deleted undesirable results. Also, there were rodent traps and a strong smell of urine in a quality-control lab area and bathrooms were in "total disrepair," with what appeared to be human waste on a wall, the report said. On March 12, the agency barred the antibiotics plant in the western Indian village of Karkhadi from exporting to the U.S.

Did You Know ...

that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration held on May 5? It is celebrated primarily in the United States and to a lesser extent in Mexico. It is observed in the U.S. as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. According to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture about the origin of the observance of Cinco de Mayo in the U.S., the modern American focus on that day first started in California in the 1860s. TIME magazine reports that "Cinco de Mayo started to come into vogue in 1940s America during the rise of the Chicano movement." The holiday gained momentum in the 1980s when marketers, especially beer companies, capitalized on the celebratory nature of the day and began to promote it.

Tip of the Week

This is another opportunity to show community support with Cinco de Mayo decorations in your pharmacy.
