Editorial: My Creed

Upon graduation from the Oklahoma University College of Pharmacy in 1966, our Dean presented each graduate a framed copy of "My Creed," reprinted here. This has hung in my various offices for 48 years, and it was actually presented in this column four years ago as an encouragement to pharmacy graduates. Today, with the direction of our country, I think it is appropriate for all U.S. citizens, especially our political leaders, to read and ponder.

MY CREED

"I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon - if I can. I seek opportunity - not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk: to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.

I refuse to barter incentive for dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence: the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid, to think and act for myself, to worship as I please, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say, 'this I have done'. All this is what it means to be an AMERICAN."

If one is not willing to contribute in some manner to America as the price of living here, maybe they do not deserve to be a part of it!

Massachusetts Judge Rules State Cannot Ban FDA-approved Painkiller
A federal judge has blocked an effort by Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick to ban sales of Zohydro ER, saying the governor's move was preempted by federal law and could harm people who need the drug for pain relief. The Judge sided with Zogenix, the manufacturer, which had argued that Gov. Patrick had no right to bar a medication that the FDA had deemed safe and effective. Gov. Patrick criticized the ruling as placing commercial interests above public health.

Another New Attention Disorder (Sluggish Cognitive Tempo)?
More than six million American children have received a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and there is increasing concern that the condition is being significantly misdiagnosed and over treated with prescription medications. Now, some powerful figures in mental health are claiming to have identified a new disorder that could vastly expand the ranks of young people treated for attention problems. Called "sluggish cognitive tempo," this "new condition," said to be characterized by lethargy, daydreaming, and slow mental processing, is estimated to be present in perhaps two million children. Some experts say there is no consensus on the specific symptoms, let alone scientific validity, and warn that the concept's promotion without vastly more scientific rigor could expose children to unwarranted diagnoses and prescription medications—problems that A.D.H.D. already faces. "We're seeing a fad in evolution: Just as A.D.H.D. has been the diagnosis du jour for 15 years or so, this is the beginning of another," said Dr. Allen Frances, an emeritus professor of psychiatry at Duke University. "This is a public health experiment on millions of kids."
