Editorial: New Experience at IJPC: A First in Pharmacy Publishing!

IJPC is pleased to announce the incorporation of Augmented Reality (AR) into the IJPC journal starting with the Nov/Dec issue. Augmented Reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented (supplemented) with computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics, or other data (e.g., GPS). The technology functions by enhancing one's current perception of reality. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in association with environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during an event. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g., adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.

IJPC plans to slowly increase the AR experiences in IJPC over time. The Nov/Dec issue will contain 5 experiences, including the special cover. As many know, the Nov/Dec covers of IJPC are designed to be unique each year. More on AR in next week's newsletter!

Nasacort Going Over the Counter
Sanofi announced that the FDA approved an over-the-counter (OTC) version of the company's allergy nasal spray Nasacort. This is the second time that Sanofi has moved one of its allergy medications from Rx to OTC status; the first being the antihistamine Allegra. It will be marketed by Chattem Inc., Sanofi's consumer health division in the U.S. The company said it should be available by the spring of 2014.

FIP Brings Pharmacists Together in Dublin
The FIP met in Dublin this past summer and attracted more than 3000 participants from 107 countries. The meeting featured business, educational, and poster sessions, along with other activities from August 31 through September 5 in the heart of Ireland's largest city, Dublin. In the year since FIP celebrated its centennial, the organization has been revising and updating activities associated with its statutes and evaluations of the statements and guidelines, some of which were adopted more than 15 years ago.

US Distributor Sanctioned by German Manufacturer
A German manufacturer took the extraordinary step of suspending shipments of a widely used drug to a U.S. distributor (Morris & Dickson LLC) this year after 20 vials were mistakenly sent to the state of Missouri to be used in executions. Fresenius Kabi said shipments of propofol were halted to a Louisiana distributor for 4 1/2 months through mid-March because the company feared the European Union would ban export of the drug altogether if it was used in executions. The death penalty is banned in the European Union and bans the export of drugs used in executions. The death-penalty states have now changed the drugs they use in lethal injections, found new supplies of existing drugs, or buy drugs from compounding pharmacies.

Did You Know ...

...that we can get our money back on items that are sold based on false advertising? Why can we not have laws repealed if they are based on false advertising and "facts" (statements and promises made during their deliberations)?
