Editorial: Changing Priorities

Life brings changes with age, experiences, and life situations. With age comes health limitations resulting in one not being able to do as much as they could when they were younger; experience allows one to look at ones accomplishments and shortcomings and make informed adjustments; and life situations change priorities.

As time progresses, I find it increasingly necessary to cut back on many external-professional activities to spend more time caring for family responsibilities and putting more time into the development of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding (IJPC) and reinforcing its impact around the world.

IJPC will especially emphasize the science and technology of quality compounding along with other important aspects of compounding. We have exciting plans starting with the November-December 2013 issue so stay tuned for some high-tech:high-touch experiences in IJPC products!

Production to Cease at Ben Venue Laboratories, Inc.
Ben Venue Laboratories of Bedford, Ohio will cease production by the end of 2013; the company cannot return to sustainable production. While interim controls implemented to assure product quality have been effective to date, in the long term, they are not sustainable. The cost of continued investment and time needed to overcome the systemic issues are not viable considering the age and condition of some of the facilities. This will affect all of Ben Venue's approximately 1100 employees over a phased reduction starting now and continuing into 2014 as the activities are closed out.

Hospira Recalls Some Lidocaine, Ondansetron, and Metoclopramide Lots
Red and black particles and glass vial defects resulted in Hospira recalling select lots of 1% lidocaine hydrochloride injection, ondansetron injection, and metoclopramide injection.

Companies Paid Up to $25,000 to Attend an FDA Meeting
At least one senator is calling for an investigation of "pay to play" allegations regarding a scientific panel that influenced the FDA's thinking on painkillers and that was funded by major pharmaceutical companies that put up as much $25,000 to attend a meeting. The letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg requested that the agency turn over a long list of documents, including the names of all the companies that paid to attend the panel's meetings, how much they paid, and e-mails between the organizers and agency officials.

Maine Now Allows Prescription-drug Imports
The search for less expensive prescription drugs long has led consumers to reach beyond U.S. borders. Maine's law that took effect Wednesday now provides state support for these searches. It sanctions the direct purchase of mail-order drugs from some foreign pharmacies and has ignited a court battle with the pharmaceutical industry that sets the stage for a broader fight. U.S. citizens usually pay more for prescriptions than residents of countries where the government imposes pricing caps or negotiates prices with drug companies. Even though the FDA prohibits importing medication by any means, they rarely enforce the ban among consumers. Maine's law allows citizens to get drugs from Canada, the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia.
