The Hormone of Desire: The Truth about Sexuality, Menopause, and Testosterone

Susan Rako, MD
Three Rivers Press

Good reference for patients concerned about libido.

In this revised and updated edition, Rako presents new information about testosterone and its relationship to sexual libido and as a protector of bones and the cardiovascular system. She explores the vital role that testosterone plays in a woman’s body and how this hormone is affected by menopause. She addresses the resistance of the medical community, pharmaceutical industry, and general population to recognize testosterone deficiency as a medical problem. The pros and cons of natural and synthetic treatment options are presented, with an emphasis on compounded natural bioidentical treatments. Of particular interest to pharmacists, chapter 8 includes a discussion of the history of compounding and the products and services that compounding pharmacists can offer to both patients and providers with respect to testosterone and HRT. Written at a layperson’s level, it is a great resource for patients interested in testosterone supplementation.
